It is worth noting Fairfax Commonwealth's Attorney Ray Morrogh has officially acknowledged a request for information from Falls Church City officials in the Steve Cornejo killing. The acknowledgment is the first official response from Fairfax County to Falls Church after nearly two years of requests from City officials. Falls Church has made numerous requests for information to various Fairfax County officials about what, if any, investigation is being done in the controversial shooting death of popular Falls Church resident Steve Cornejo.
During his November 2007 election, CA Morrogh acknowledged he was re-looking at the case in light of dramatic eyewitness testimony brought forward during a civil trial. Morrogh had made a campaign promise to, irrespective of his charging decision, communicate with the family of Steve Cornejo and to the Falls Church community about his prosecutorial judgment in the case.
In a December 13, 2007, response to an earlier letter reminding Morrogh of his campaign promise from Falls Church City Mayor Gardner, CA Morrogh replied:
"This is to acknowledge that I received a letter from you on December 11, 2007 regarding [the Steve Cornejo matter]. This office is reviewing the case at this time. When it is appropriate to do so, we will contact you. Thank you and have a nice holiday season...."
The response is a bit perfunctory, but significant in that it was made at all. Fairfax officials, including Chairman Gerry Connolly, have been criticized for stonewalling even the most innocuous requests for information in the Steve Cornejo shooting death.
So even a few scraps from the master's table are a tasty treat for a community starved for justice in the death of Steve Cornejo .
